Shapiro open Kansas site, targets nonferrous metals

Shapiro Metals Holding Co. has expanded its reach in the United States after launching operations at a new facility in Wichita, Kansas.

The 35,000-square-foot facility will focus on nonferrous scrap collected from industrial accounts.

The expansion into Kansas was triggered by client interest, company president and chief executive officer Bruce Shapiro told AMM.

“We expanded into Wichita at the request of our industrial customers. They were interested in partnering with industrial scrap experts that have a national footprint,” he said.

The Wichita facility, which began operations two weeks ago, is the company’s ninth full-service location and will have no retail operation, Shapiro said.

Shapiro Metals processes more than 100 million pounds of nonferrous scrap per year and 50,000 gross tons of ferrous scrap annually. The company will continue to look at growth opportunities, he added.

The St. Louis-based metals recycler has a preference for organic growth.  Last year the company increased its presence in Texas with the addition of a facility in Denton (amm.com,June 17, 2013).

Shapiro has ruled out any future acquisitions at the time, stating that the company would continue to grow organically.
