Aluminum (Al)
Origin: Before 5000 BCE people in Mesopotamia were making pottery from a clay with an aluminum compound and late in the 18th century, alumina was recognized as a potential source of metal. In 1855, it was introduced to the public at the Paris Exposition.

Our focus at Shapiro extends across the aerospace, food equipment, automotive, HVAC, chemical, and marine industries among others, where demands are paramount. Our stainless steel team is dedicated to collecting and packaging superior grades of steel that meet the stringent requirements of modern manufacturing while aligning with sustainability goals.

Expertise & Innovation in Aluminum Sustainability

Aluminum is infinitely recyclable. For instance, an aluminum can from 50 years ago can continue to be recycled into new products and when recycled is back on the store shelf within sixty days. In fact, it’s no wonder that aluminum is so widely used. It is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity, can be drawn into foil, and is light and highly corrosion resistant. When alloyed with other elements like copper, zinc, magnesium, silicon, manganese and lithium, mechanical properties like strength, durability and corrosion resistance are created.

Master Alloys by Shapiro takes this a step further and creates products with specific additives for rolling mills, foundries, and billet makers. Through our expertise and innovation, we are redefining the possibilities of aluminum as a sustainable material. The seven common aluminum alloys used in manufacturing, 1000, 2000, 3000, 5000, and 6000 series in which additional blends are composed. For example, Shapiro buys 6061 and 6063 grade aluminum from window manufacturers and 7000 series, particularly, 7075, the aluminum with the highest strength that is used by the aerospace industry and to manufacture structural components. Our trailer manufacturing clients use 5000 series aluminum to build their trailers.

Reach Circular & Sustainability Milestones

Once Shapiro’s clients send their manufacturing biproduct for recycling, Shapiro does the rest. Our goal is always trailer-load quantities which efficiently lowers both greenhouse gas emissions and freight costs. We also receive aluminum that must be processed or repackaged to send to a consumer. The perfect scenario is when Shapiro provides a circular option for our clients, offering them the service to manufacture using 100% recycled aluminum for their own biproduct to create the materials they will need for new raw material.

Manufacturers are seeking materials that have a positive impact on our environment. Master Alloys by Shapiro brings them a circular option that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, solid waste reduction as well as wastewater elimination.
