8.1.07: Alcoa Recognizes Shapiro Metals as Top 10 Scrap Supplier for 2007. For the second year in a row, Alcoa has recognized Shapiro Metals as one of their top 10 scrap processors. Since 2004, Alcoa has selected 10 scrap suppliers across North America and acknowledged them for being the best in the scrap industry. Alcoa bases their decision on many factors, including scrap volumes, quality, environmental compliance, and ISO 9000 certification. According to Rich Markiewicz, Alcoa’s Vice President of Metal Purchasing, Shapiro Metals stands out as one of "Alcoa’s benchmark in grading all scrap dealers from whom we are buying." When speaking about the Top Scrap Suppliers for 2007, Markiewicz commented that "this outstanding group has formed a partnership with Alcoa Materials Management and Alcoa plants to work together to understand each others needs and objectives in improving the scrap process within Alcoa plants." Shapiro is honored to be recognized, in Alcoa’s words, as "the best of the best in the industry," and anticipates even greater volumes and quality for the upcoming year.
